Florida's 2026 tax brackets

There are no brackets to show. Florida's constitution prohibits a state income tax on individuals, so the state line of every Florida paycheck reads $0: That single fact drives a measurable migration: Florida consistently ranks among the top destinations for higher earners changing states, and this constitutional zero is the headline reason.

The real cost of a tax-free paycheck

Florida pays its bills with other people's money, in a sense. Tourists fund a big slice of the budget through the 6% state sales tax plus local add-ons that can reach 8.5% in some counties. Residents pay through property tax and, increasingly, through the cost of insuring anything the hurricanes can reach.

That insurance bill is the part the "no income tax" pitch leaves out. Homeowners insurance in Florida runs several times the national average, and it keeps climbing. A renter in Tampa might save $2,000 a year in state tax versus Georgia and hand half of it back in higher premiums and rents. The paycheck is tax-free. The rest of life is not.

Still, for high earners the math is hard to beat. A $65,000 single salary keeps $54,408 in Florida. The same pay in Georgia keeps about $52,000 after the state's 4.99%. And retirees get the fullest version of the deal: no tax on wages, pensions, Social Security or retirement account withdrawals, plus a homestead exemption that caps annual increases in assessed home value.

What surprises new Floridians

An example you can check

Take a $65,000 salary, single filer, no extras. Federal tax is $5,620, Social Security $4,030, Medicare $943, state tax $0. Take-home: $54,408 a year, $2,092.60 every two weeks.

Scale the salary and nothing changes about the state's behavior, because the state is not participating. At $100,000 a single Floridian keeps $79,180, identical to Texas down to the dollar. A couple filing jointly on $65,000 keeps $56,588. That is the offer Florida makes: the same paycheck math as every other no-tax state, near the beach, with the insurance market as the hidden counter-offer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Florida have no income tax?
It is in the state constitution, and has been in some form since 1924. The state funds itself with sales tax, property tax, tourism dollars and fees. Amending it would require a supermajority vote, so it is not going anywhere.
Is Florida actually cheap to live in?
Not like it used to be. Rents in the big metros and homeowners insurance statewide have climbed fast. The tax savings are real, but price them against housing and insurance before deciding a Florida salary beats a Georgia one.
Do snowbirds owe Florida tax on their income?
Florida taxes nothing, so the question is really about your home state. Most states tax you as a resident until you genuinely move: 183 days in Florida, a Florida driver's license, voter registration, the works. Half measures do not fool revenue departments.
Does Florida tax pensions or Social Security?
No. Florida has no income tax of any kind on individuals, so pensions, Social Security, 401(k) withdrawals and investment income are all outside the state's reach. That total exemption is a major reason the state draws retirees.
How does Florida's homestead exemption work?
If a Florida home is your primary residence, the first $25,000 of assessed value is exempt from all property taxes and another $25,000 is exempt from most local taxes. The Save Our Homes rule also caps annual assessment increases at 3%, which is why long-time owners pay far less than their neighbors would.
