New York's 2026 tax brackets

New York uses nine graduated brackets. These are the 2026 rates for a single filer, after the new cuts, applied to income above the state's $8,000 standard deduction:

What makes a New York paycheck different

The 2026 rate cut is real but small: a tenth of a percentage point off the five lowest brackets. On a $90,000 salary it saves a single filer a few dozen dollars, not hundreds. New York remains one of the highest-taxed states in the country, just slightly less so than last year.

The bigger deal is geography. The state brackets above are only half the story inside the five boroughs. New York City levies its own income tax, 3.078% to 3.876%, on top of the state tax. Yonkers tacks on a surcharge too. Our calculator covers state tax only, so if you live in the city, add roughly another 3 to 4 points to the state tax line when you budget.

Remote workers get a special headache. New York's "convenience of the employer" rule says that if you work remotely for a New York company for your own convenience rather than the employer's necessity, New York still taxes that income. Living in Florida does not automatically rescue you from New York tax if your desk is legally in Manhattan.

Run $90,000, single, no extras: federal tax $10,970, FICA $6,885, state tax $4,270. You keep $67,875, $2,610.59 every two weeks. Add the NYC tax and the real number drops a few thousand more.

Mistakes New York workers make

An example you can check

Take a $90,000 salary, single filer, no 401(k). Federal tax comes to $10,970. Social Security takes $5,580 and Medicare $1,305. New York state tax is $4,270. Take-home: $67,875 a year, $2,610.59 every two weeks, before any New York City tax.

At higher incomes the state line stops being polite. A single filer at $250,000 owes New York $13,962 and keeps $169,220, an effective rate of 32.3% across all taxes. The nasty surprise sits lower, around $1.08 million, where the marginal rate jumps from 6.85% to 9.65% in one step. File jointly at $90,000 instead and the state takes $3,661 while the couple keeps $73,014, before any city tax enters the chat.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra does New York City tax cost?
NYC charges 3.078% to 3.876% on top of state tax, depending on income. On a $90,000 salary that is roughly $3,000 a year the calculator above does not include. Budget it separately if you live in the five boroughs.
Did New York really cut income taxes for 2026?
Yes, slightly. The state budget trimmed the five lowest brackets by 0.1 percentage points, so the bottom rate fell from 4% to 3.9%. High brackets were untouched, and the top rate stays at 10.9%.
I work remotely for a New York employer. Do I owe New York tax?
Probably, unless the remote arrangement is for your employer's necessity rather than your convenience. New York's convenience-of-the-employer rule is one of the most aggressive in the country, and it surprises people every year.
What are the NY SDI and Paid Family Leave (PFL) deductions on my pay stub?
Two small state insurance lines. SDI (statutory disability insurance) costs employees at most $0.60 a week by law, and many employers cover it. PFL is bigger: in 2026 it takes 0.432% of your gross wages, capped at $411.91 a year. Neither is an income tax, and this calculator does not include them — expect your real stub to sit a few dollars per check below the number above if your employer passes both through.
Does a 401(k) reduce New York state and NYC income taxes?
Yes. New York starts from federal wages, so a traditional 401(k) contribution lowers your state tax (and NYC tax, if you live in the city) the same way it lowers federal tax. It does not lower FICA — Social Security and Medicare still apply to the full amount. That is the opposite of Pennsylvania, which taxes 401(k) contributions going in.
